Have you noticed the drop in visibility across the Front Range over the last few days? This haziness is actually smoke from the 11,000+ acre Tinder Fire currently burning in central Arizona. This may only be a foreshadow of things to come later this summer as parts of southwestern Colorado and the Four Corners region have recently shifted into the most severe drought classification. We provide an update on the situation and take a look at snowpack statewide.

After experiencing near-record snowfall last winter with a historically strong El Niño in place, the better part of the last year has seen below normal precipitation across most of eastern Colorado. Drought has continued to expand and intensify through the winter season. However, a fruitful pattern shift is ahead, beginning with our first spring storm of the year! After a warm final day to the weekend, one which Boulder set a record high at 92 degrees, this week is slated to turn much cooler starting this afternoon. Temperatures will be coolest on Tuesday with highs below seasonal norms and overnight lows falling Tuesday night likely into the lower 40’s on the Plains. This is all in response to a strong cold front pushing south from Wyoming. With the front also comes the chance of rain and storms but these look to be hit or miss through the week. The atmosphere over the last several weeks has been transient across the western United States, with frequent (but weak) systems always keeping us on our toes. We haven’t had an extended period of persistent weather in quite some time. That changes this week as a ridge builds in across the region, bringing a sense of consistency to the forecast once again. Summer is the one time of year when you don’t need us meteorologists. You already know the weather for today (and everyday) will start sunny, warm into the 90’s, then promptly cloud up and produce a brief storm which generates a “just okay” rainbow before another stunning Colorado sunset. Following a warm weekend, with highs in the mid to upper 80’s across the Plains, this week will feature slightly cooler but still above average temperatures for the middle of October. A series of cold fronts will be the main storyline, along with the subsequent effect they will have on high temperatures.
